Should Women Cold Plunge? Myths and What the Science Says
By PLUNJ · November 4, 2026
Cold plunging is popular, but plenty of women still wonder whether it is for them. Let's separate fact from fiction.
At PLUNJ Paradise Valley, we believe wellness should empower you, not intimidate you.
Myth 1: Cold plunging is bad for women's hormones
The truth: There is no blanket rule that women should avoid cold exposure.
Dr. Susanna Søberg, a researcher in thermal physiology, notes that women and men handle cold differently. Women may lean more on brown fat and constriction of blood vessels to stay warm, while men generally have more muscle mass to generate heat.
Takeaway: Women can benefit from cold exposure, but the best approach can vary from person to person.
Myth 2: You should not cold plunge during your period
The truth: There is no universal rule against it.
A 2024 study in Post Reproductive Health surveyed more than 1,100 women who regularly swim in cold water. Many described better mood and less anxiety, along with relief from menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms. These are self-reported experiences, though, not proof that cold water treats any hormonal or menstrual condition.
Listen to your body. If you feel run down or uncomfortable, a shorter plunge or a warm sauna session may be the better choice that day.
Myth 3: The colder and longer, the better
The truth: More is not always better.
Dr. Søberg describes cold exposure as a controlled stressor. The point is not to endure the harshest temperature or outlast everyone. Your body benefits from the right dose of stress followed by recovery, and pushing past your tolerance does not necessarily add anything.
At PLUNJ, we would rather you pay attention to how you feel than race a timer.
Myth 4: You have to be an athlete or wellness expert
The truth: Cold exposure fits everyday life.
Busy professional, mom, gym regular, or simply curious: you can explore it at your pace. Begin gradually, breathe normally, and let yourself get comfortable. You do not have to prove anything.
Your Body. Your Practice. Your PLUNJ.
Cold plunging is not about pushing yourself to the limit. It is about finding what leaves you feeling refreshed, grounded, and connected to yourself.
At PLUNJ Paradise Valley, our Hosts will guide you through your first visit and help you find a practice that feels right. Come experience the sauna, cold plunge, and community.
