So you’ve heard about the amazing benefits of contrast therapy and you’re ready to take the plunge (literally!). First off, congratulations! You’re about to start a journey that can transform your health, recovery, and overall well-being.

At PLUNJ, we welcome first-timers every day, and we know that stepping into our facilities can feel both exciting and a bit intimidating. Don’t worry – we’ve created this guide to help you feel prepared and confident for your first visit.

What is Contrast Therapy?

Before diving in, let’s quickly cover what you’re signing up for. Contrast therapy involves alternating between heat exposure (sauna) and cold exposure (cold plunge). This temperature contrast creates powerful effects in your body that a single temperature alone cannot achieve.

The basic routine looks like this:

  • Start with heat (sauna) for 10-15 minutes
  • Transition to cold (cold plunge) for 1-3 minutes
  • Repeat the cycle 2-3 times
  • End with a cool-down period

Before Your First Visit

What to Bring

  • Swimwear: A bathing suit you’re comfortable in
  • Towel: We provide towels, but you’re welcome to bring your own
  • Flip flops: For walking between areas
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is important
  • Lock: For securing your belongings (some locations provide locks)

What NOT to Bring

  • Jewelry: Best to leave it at home
  • Electronics: While you can bring your phone, we recommend disconnecting
  • Expectations of perfection: Everyone starts somewhere!

Mental Preparation

The mental aspect of contrast therapy is just as important as the physical. Here’s how to prepare your mind:

  • Set an intention: Why are you trying contrast therapy? Recovery? Stress relief? General wellness?
  • Accept discomfort: The cold will be challenging at first – that’s normal and part of the benefit
  • Practice breathing: Simple deep breathing techniques will help you manage the cold
  • Start with an open mind: Your first experience may be intense, but the benefits build over time

The Heat (Sauna) Experience

For most beginners, we recommend starting with the sauna:

  • Temperature: Our saunas typically run between 160-180°F
  • First-time duration: Start with 10 minutes
  • What you’ll feel: Initial warmth will build to a full-body sweat
  • Normal reactions: Increased heart rate, sweating, and a warming sensation throughout your body

Beginner tip: Sit on the lower bench for your first session where it’s slightly cooler.

The Cold Plunge Experience

This is often the most challenging part for newcomers:

  • Temperature: Our cold plunges are kept between 38-45°F
  • First-time duration: Aim for 1-2 minutes (it’s OK if you need to start with less!)
  • What you’ll feel: Intense cold sensation, possible numbness in extremities, and shortened breath
  • Normal reactions: Gasping (at first), skin redness, and tingling sensations

Beginner tips:

  • Focus on controlling your breathing
  • Start with just your legs if needed
  • Remember: it gets easier with each session!

Between Rounds

We provide comfortable relaxation areas where you can:

  • Rest between rounds
  • Hydrate
  • Process the sensations
  • Prepare for the next round

Common First-Timer Questions

“How many rounds should I do my first time?”

For beginners, we recommend 2-3 complete cycles. Quality matters more than quantity!

“Will I be able to handle the cold?”

Yes! Almost everyone can tolerate the cold with proper breathing and mindset. Start with a shorter duration and build up.

“What if I need to get out early?”

That’s completely fine! Listen to your body. There’s no shame in building your tolerance gradually.

“Will I feel benefits after just one session?”

Many people report feeling energized, clear-headed, and refreshed even after their first session. The cumulative benefits build with regular practice.

“What should I do after my session?”

Take some time to rest and rehydrate. Many people enjoy the calm, relaxed state that follows a complete contrast therapy session.
